Lathira Shoreleave
Location: USS Arawyn

Sorvak paced slowly through the Science Labs. PADD in hand, he looked through the notes his department heads had made and checked the lab equipment and experiments.
The labs usually had an understated hum of activity as dozens of scientists sat quietly by consoles, discovering the mysteries of the universe.
Some thought that in this day and age they already knew everything there was to know, but Sorvak didn't hold by that thesis. Their recent encounter with the Eirians was proof that the universe still held a lot in store.
He passed through the astrometrics lab. Wall height screens surrounded the space, but they were all currently blank. His people were still working on mapping what was known of Eirian space. Which wasn't much, at the moment. Maybe someday they would be able to add to their body of knowledge.
The advantage of having the Eirians disappear was that theories abounded and nobody could have their theory beset by facts.
Passing through the xenobiology lab, he came to a halt. The lights on the consoles flashed amber, more visible in the low lighting conditions.
There were several experiments ongoing in the biology lab, testing the connections between the rift harmonics, the Eirians' subdermal bioluminescence and that of their ship's hull.
Crossing towards the line of consoles, Sorvak tapped them and frowned at the results. The primary EPS flow was fluctuating—a clear indication of a massive power draw elsewhere on the ship.
He tapped his badge. "Cmdr Sorvak to Engineering."
"Engineering here, sir," a youthful voice answered.
"Why is power being diverted from the Science Labs?"
"Sir, all ship's power is currently being directed for diagnostics of the tactical systems."
Sorvak could feel his anger rising.
He closed his eyes, and took a few deep calming breaths, using a Vulcan breathing rhythm.
"Sir?" The engineer asked.
Sorvak opened his eyes. When he spoke, he sounded as calm and collected as he usually did.
"Please divert power back to the science labs. We are currently running experiments and this has caused us 4.7% data degradation."
"I will have to run this by Cmdr Harlan."
You do that.
"Sorvak out."
He took a few more deep breaths, thankful that there was no one about to see him.
Long ago he had decided to focus on his Vulcan half. He knew most human-vulcan hybrids did so. In many ways it was easier. His emotions were more volatile than most humans.
As a scientist he knew that it would require more tests to validate that determination.
But he didn't really need his emotions measured.
He had grown up among humans, and largely ignored his Vulcan heritage. Physiology, however, was inescapable. His physical strength and lack of emotional control had led to several fights in his youth, and that had scared him.
He had once almost killed somebody. As the individual in question was convalescing in hospital, he himself had fled to a Vulcan monastery.
This was sanctioned by Starfleet JAG as a form of cultural-corrective rehabilitation.
He had spent three years there. Three years in which he learned how to better control his emotions.
It was an ongoing struggle, though he usually had his emotions in check.
There was something now that had thrown him off-balance.
He required more meditation.
As part of the shoreleave activities, he had participated in an enlightening meditation session a few days ago.
He could see that he needed a few more sessions.
