Mira was standing in the tiny observation deck, watching the light show that was warp travel. She knew that they were passing countless stars and billions of people on the way, but all she could see were the streaking trails of warp.

Well, that wasn't exactly true. Though the lights were dimmed, the faulty viewscreen dampener let her see a faint reflection of herself. Auburn hair, shining eyes, and a fresh blue uniform.

The civilian transport ship did not have a lot of amenities, but Mira didn't need much. Nobody else was interested in watching the stars and so she had the place to herself. Or maybe it was because there was barely any room for more than one person.

This was the last leg of her trip. She still had a few days to go before she reached Starbase 369 and she couldn't wait for it. She knew that time would pass, whether she wanted it to or not. But it felt as though she had spent the past decade doing nothing but waiting.

She was 14, maybe even 13, when she decided she wanted to join Starfleet. Life on her home planet - a small colony world - was challenging, but she longed for something else. She would go out of the settled colony and spend hours in the ancient woods that blanketed the planet. At night, she would see the stars spread out across the sky and wish she could be among them.

Her parents weren't happy about her choice. They had come as children with their parents, the first settlers to establish this colony. Their entire extended family was here, or at most spread out in the daughter colonies of the region. All her siblings and cousins were happy and driven to make their mark in creating this new world. But that wasn't enough for Mira.

To their credit, they didn't stop her either. "When you're old enough, you can go wherever you want," they said.

And so began the waiting.

First she waited until she was old enough, then she waited until she was accepted into Starfleet Academy, then she waited until she graduated, and now she was waiting for her very first assignment.

She only hoped that now that she was finally approaching her goal, she would learn how to stop waiting.
