Beyond the Beige

Mission: The Doldrums

Sabrina had discovered that there was a particular rhythm to survey work.

At first, everything had been interesting.

The first uncharted system had warranted her full attention. The second had earned nearly as much. By the seventh, even Sabrina had found it difficult to summon much enthusiasm for another collection of lifeless rocks circling an otherwise unremarkable star.

There was value in the work. She knew that better than most. Every updated chart, every corrected stellar position and every world reduced from unknown to a proper classification made this corner of the galaxy a little less empty on Federation maps.

It simply wasn't terribly exciting.

Sabrina shifted in the center chair, one hand resting lightly against the armrest while the main viewer displayed their latest destination.

At least this one was pretty.

The star burned a brilliant white-blue against the darkness, its light catching the edge of the enormous gas giant occupying much of the viewscreen. Several moons were already visible, tiny against the planet's bulk. Even from their present distance, ribbons of color could be seen curling around its poles.

Sabrina leaned forward slightly.

"Well."

After days of beige planets, gray moons and one particularly disappointing comet, it was practically extravagant.

The first sensor reports began filling the displays around the bridge.

The gas giant possessed an unusually powerful magnetosphere. That alone would have made it worth a closer look, but the interaction between the planet, its moons and the remarkably active parent star was producing readings that refused to resolve neatly into any single phenomenon.

Several overlapping phenomena, apparently.

Now that was interesting.

Sabrina rose from the center chair and crossed toward Science, studying the information as it accumulated.

"Reduce speed."

Her gaze moved over the initial readings. Plasma activity stretched between at least two of the moons. Radio emissions were appearing across several frequencies. One rocky satellite seemed to possess a magnetic signature entirely disproportionate to its size.

A smile threatened at the corner of her mouth.

They had spent days mapping things.

They might finally have found something worth mapping properly.

"Take us far enough inside the system for a detailed survey, but keep us clear of the strongest magnetic activity until Science has had an opportunity to understand what we're looking at."

She turned slightly toward the rest of the bridge.

"Science, full spectral analysis. I want the planet, its satellites and the stellar interaction characterized separately before we start deciding which readings belong together."

Her attention shifted toward Operations.

"Coordinate with Engineering and begin preparing our probes. If we're going to leave a marker on the chart, I'd prefer we know what we're marking."

Sabrina returned her attention to the viewscreen.

Another ribbon of pale light curled across the gas giant's northern hemisphere, impossibly large against the darkness.

There was no distress call.

No unidentified vessel waiting for them.

No immediate indication that anyone required rescuing.

Just something they had never seen before.

For the moment, that was more than enough.
