Sabrina stood at the head of the long table, the viewport behind her framing Spacedock in the sort of flattering light usually reserved for portraits. Tug traffic moved with orderly precision, a comfort to someone who thrived on systems running as they should. She rested her hands on the back of the chair before her and let the room settle.
“Good afternoon,” she began, her voice even but with that slight British inflection that could make a greeting sound like the start of an inspection. “Thank you for making the time. I know several of you only stepped aboard within the last day, and some of you are still finding your way around, but I wanted us in the same room before we’re relying on each other in less comfortable circumstances.”
Her gaze travelled around the table. “We have a brand new ship, in some cases brand new assignments, and the inevitable learning curve that comes with both. My aim is that we get ahead of those challenges now, while the only thing moving outside that viewport is dock traffic.”
She straightened slightly. “I’ll start. I’m Captain Sabrina Corbin. My background is in Operations, logistics, coordination, and generally preventing things from falling apart when no one’s looking. I’ve served everywhere from remote outposts to postings that should have come with hazard pay for my patience. I’m meeting most of you for the first time, but Lieutenant Powell and I have served together for many years. And, in the grand Starfleet tradition of unexpected additions to the manifest, I’m currently housing a kitten who has yet to grasp the concept of chain of command.”
She gestured lightly to her right. “Let’s go around the table. Name, department, and a short piece about where you’ve come from — that can be career history or something suitably harmless you’re willing to share. Then we’ll move into readiness.”
[Your introductions]
Once the last introduction was made, Sabrina inclined her head.
“Thank you. Now, readiness reports. I want them direct, no sugar-coating. If there’s something that could slow our departure, I’d rather know it now than discover it halfway past the outer marker. We’ll start with Engineering.”
[Your department reports]
When the final report was given, “Commander Holt, anything additional to add?” She turned and asked her XO. Sabrina leaned her palms against the table, posture relaxed, but her expression sharp enough to hold attention.
“Once those docking clamps release, we’re it. No safety net, no second set of hands from the yard. I expect clear communication, quick solutions, and a willingness to help each other without needing to be asked twice.”
Her eyes moved slowly around the room before she added, with just the faintest quirk of a smile, “If we can manage that, I might even be persuaded to believe we’ll leave spacedock without a single dramatic incident… but let’s not test my optimism.”
She straightened. “That’s all. Let’s get to it.”
