730 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Fractured Accord
Location: Sickbay :: USS Arawyn
Timeline: Immediately following Nav Buoy Incident
// Sickbay :: Arawyn :: //
Riah was seeing to the kitten, Baylee, in the Insolation Room 1, when it began the klaxon sounded red alert deafening the general discourse throughout Sickbay. That was followed by the Captain's ship-wide message to all Departments to take action, a Navigational Buoy had exploded, causing damage to the USS Newton.
“Medical, Dr Amberlyn,” Corbin's voice of command alerted. “Open immediate channel to Newton. Coordinate triage and prepare to beam casualties aboard if their facilities are compromised.”
Riah clicked the response to the main Communications officer to reply, "Aye Aye Sir. Medical has gone to emergency protocols. Captain, expect a report as soon as possible. Comms give me a connection to Sickbay on Newton. "
Moment later, the clatter of a busy sickbay interrupted the comm. "Arawyn, This is Newton medical. The ship has taken hull damage. Sickbay not compromised. Repeat Sickbay is not compromised. We have three injured in our care and a head trauma. Request permission to beam the head trauma case to Arawyn for immediate diagnostic and treatment."
"Permission granted. Coordinates sent. Please forward patient's file asap," replied Riah. "Dr McDavid. We have an emergency. Head trauma. Please report to Sickbay STAT."
"McDavid. On the way," replied the doctor, who was the emergency medical specialist on the physician team of Arawyn.
"Aye Arawyn," came Newton's reply. "Received, transport initiated, files forwarded. Please confirm receipt of patient and files."
"We have the patient in Surgical One," called voice over the intradepartmental comm. "Medical files received."
"Receipt confirmed Newton, patient and files. We will advise of status as soon as possible. Do you anticipate further need of our facilities?" Riah asked.
"No, Arawyn. We can handle it unless there is further damage to the ship. Newton out."
McDavid arrived seconds later. He was informed upon entering Sickbay that the patient was in Surgical One and he didn't stop until he was standing beside his patient. Riah was already there, running scans and diagnostics.
"The patient is a 25 year old male Chief Petty Office on duty in the nacelle at the time of the explosion. Emergency force fielding saved him from being swept into space, but the force of the energy hit on the exterior hull of the nacelle had slammed him across the catwalk, over the railing to land on his right shoulder and head on the level below," Riah reported. "External bleeding minimal, but scans indicate a subdural hematoma quickly developing on the right side of the brain."
McDavid nodded, reading the man's general health file as she spoke. "Got it," he said as the comm system came alive again.
"Arawyn, this is Newton, We have a severe burn case. Request permission to transfer to your sickbay."
"Granted," called Riah, moving to the other bed in the surgical suite. A woman appeared on the table. She was conscious and clearly in pain. She had been in the galley, moving a large pot of scalding water on the stove when the jolt of the ship caused her to stumble and pour the extremely hot water down the front of her body, over her forearms, chest, belly and the front of her right thigh. Upon removing her food service uniform, the skin was bright pink and already developing massive blisters.
Riah went to work immediately, handling the pain with a hypospray, which also included antibiotics against the threat of infection. A dermal regeneration unit was used to begin to cool the tissue which was holding the heat. A gentle spray of pale pink foam was applied to the burned skin and a three inch margin around the burn. The patient relaxed considerably as the pain withdrew. The wound itself was numb due to the injured nerve endings, but the area around the wound was extremely sensitive.
After the foam disappeared and the residue dried, the nurse was able to apply the wand of the Regenerator, which without touching the skin, reduced the blisters, and repaired the majority of the damage. Three treatments of the Regenerator would result in complete healing, with no scarring. The trauma to the entire body would take a day or so to resolve, so they would keep the woman in sickbay for rest and observation and encourage her to counseling with Dr Denari for help with mentally dealing with the trauma.
