Mission:
Arawyn’s Itchy Trigger Finger
Location: Bridge :: Arawyn
// Bridge :: Arawyn //
Medic Shayna Fritz had been dispatched from the Mess Hall, where she’d been patching up minor injuries, to the Bridge to examine a broken arm. She had not expected that arm to belong to the Ship’s Executive Officer Suzanna Batenburg. But she was an experienced trauma medic and was well prepared to handle the situation in a highly professional manner.
“Commander Batenburg, I’m Sr Petty Officer Fritz. May I examine you? You may stay right where you are in the chair.”
"Of course," Suzanna replied and nodded. Where she hadn't wanted to burden sickbay which was busy enough, her bio control could only do so much and a broken arm needed more attention.
Shayna first used her hand scanner to examine Batenburg from her head, down the midline of her body, to her feet and back up to ensure there were no other injuries beyond the broken arm. Other than a few contusions and developing bruises, she appeared to have no other serious injuries. She produced a hypospray. “This is a painkiller and medication to prevent shock,” she explained. “ It’s formulated for your mixed physiology.”
Suzanna nodded again, "You are the expert here, Sr Petty Officer."
“Thank you, Ma'am,” Shayna acknowledged. After adjusting the hypospray, she gave the injection.
The relief was fast working. Suzanna closed her eyes for a moment, to adjust her bio control. That too was a relief, not to have that work in the background all the time. Her features relaxed a little, although only a trained observer would notice.
Next, Shayna placed an inflatable pillow on the Commander’s lap and asked her to rest her arm there as comfortably as possible. She repeated a detailed scan of the arm. “We’re lucky, it is in alignment, and I think the osteo-regenerator will secure the bone quickly.” Indeed, subsequent scans indicated the same.
"I do not believe I would have been able to come here with just the support of a sling if it hadn't been," Suzanna acknowledged. A lucky break, literally and figuratively. She waited patiently for the medic to finish her work and scans.
Within about 10 minutes, the osteo-regenerator had repaired the broken bone, and the dermal regenerator, calibrated for interior muscle tissue, had repaired all internal tissue repair. “You should have complete use of your arm within about 24 hours as the bone continues to harden. That sort of makes it sound like the bone is soft or delicate. It’s not. But the healing process continues for about 24 hours to be completely hardened off. How’s your shoulder feel?” asked Shayna.
"Understood," Suzanna nodded about the 24 hours. "My shoulder has a bruise, I was buried under equipment after falling. With the painkillers effect, I do not notice it at the moment."
“I saw that on the scans, and thought it would be corrected,” replied Shayna. “But I’ll cover it again.” She ran the dermal regenerator over the entire shoulder, followed by another full body medical scan. “That should assure you have no pain or discoloration after the painkillers wear off,” the medic assured her. “Is anyone else on the bridge in need of me?”
After a few moment, the Comms Officer spoke up. "I could use a little relief from this bruise to my ribs," he admitted.
"With your permission, Commander, I'll go now," said Shayna respectfully.
"Thank you, and dismissed."
Shayna moved to the communications officer's station.
