Echo from the Rift

The turbolift opened and Sorvak stepped out. He paused a moment to consider the rift projected on the viewscreen. Then, nodding to the officer who had been manning the Science Station, he took his place.

All attention on the bridge was focused on the opening rift on the viewscreen. "Wounds in the sky", the Eirians had called it, and it did look like a wound in space. Colored tendrils were coming out of an open maw.

Sorvak could also see the Eirian ship, holding position in front of the rift. A smaller viewscreen on his console followed the alien lifeform.

Sorvak had insufficient data to know how long the rift would remain open. He would have liked to send a probe in order to get more data, but the probe itself could cause the very thing they wished to avoid.

He tapped at his console, bringing up the harmonics that were issuing from the rift itself. It was a variant of the harmonics he had studied previously, that had been issued from the displaced region in the Eirian ship itself.

An update from engineering interrupted his thoughts: "Shield harmonic aligned."

He could see an immediate change in the harmonics. The harmonic issuing from the rift had started variations on the same theme, still keeping phase coherence with the Arawyn's shields.

"Captain," he said, "the Arawyn's harmonic alignment appears to be influencing the rift."
